About Eta Kappa Nu

Eta Kappa Nu is the national honor society for Electrical Engineering and Computer science. Eta Kappa Nu was founded in 1904 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. Currently, HKN has over 200 chapters in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Eligibility depends mostly on scholarship, personal character, voluntary services, and distinguished accomplishments. For undergraduates, the most important qualification is scholarship during the first years in college.

        At MIT, HKN is primarily interested in improving course VI by providing students with many helpful resources. These resources include the Underground guide to course VI and VI-A, a tutoring program, the Big Sib program, and social events.

        Students become inducted into Eta Kappa Nu during their junior and senior years at MIT. Juniors may get inducted by being in the top fourth of their course VI class, and seniors must be in the top third of their class to be eligible for membership. If you qualify academically, you will be automatically contacted by HKN. Generally, juniors must have at least a 4.7 GPA and seniors a 4.6 GPA to be contacted. Eligibles for HKN are responsible for completing 16 hours of community service to become initiated.
